The world’s largest passenger plane, the Airbus A380, was almost on the brink of closing down the A380 program due to less than anticipated orders, and only after 10 years in production.
Emirates saved the A380 program by placing an order for 20 with an option of a further 16 more. This will secure the program for about another 10 years. Deliveries to start in 2020. For 9 or 10 years Emirates will take 6 x A380s per year.
According to analysts, the A380 program is unlikely to break even with the current order patterns. However, financially Airbus won’t be impacted since the smaller jets sales accounts for billions of dollars yearly.
Emirates is the largest A380 operator, with 101 in service and 41 on order.
